Boeing Stearman Model 75, part three. The Stearman in Asia.

 
The Boeing-Stearman Model 75 is an American biplane-two seater trainer of the 1930s that was employed all around the world in various countries, among the following Asiatic ones:
  • China: In 1942 the United States sold China 150 Boeing-Stearman PT-17 primary trainer (Model A75L5) under the Lend-Lease programme. They were to serve in the trainer role at the Kuomintang Air Force School which was moved to the Lak River airport in Punjab, India (actually the closest military installation of the time that we could find there was RAF Lahore).
    After the end of World War 2, in 1946, the Chinese PT-17s flew over the so-called 'Hump Route' (the Himalayas) and returned to Chinese soil to serve as trainers for students at the Jiangqiao Aviation School. 
    In 1947 the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) bought twenty-two additional A75L5s, the first two of which were powered by the Lycoming O-435-11 engine which was considered unsuitable by Boeing due to their lack of horsepower. The ROCAF agreed that the remaining 20 aircraft would be powered by the Continental R-680-4 radial engine which yielded 220 hp of power. 
    Mister Yun Duo, who was the director of the Kuomintang Air Force's Third Aircraft Factory located at Taichung, Taiwan, copied the design of the PT-17 in 1947. 
    This copy was commonly known as CJ-1 (from Chinese 'Chū jiào' - meaning 'Primary Trainer-). These CJ-1s were made out of surplus American material left over by the Americans in Taiwan and they were powered by the Continental engine.
    The CJ-1 flew officially for the first time in February 1948 and was quickly followed by a rapid and steady mass production system, where production was supervised by ROCAF's officials.
    A total of 104 CJ-1s were manufactured and sent to various academies on Chinese mainland, most of which were sent back to Taiwan in 1949 when the Kuomintang evacuated to Taiwan and most of the CJ-1s -and surviving PT-17s- were assigned to the Gangshan Air Force Academy to serve as primary trainers. They remained there until 1958 when they were withdrawn from ROCAF's inventory.
    On the other side, it is known that at least one PT-17 was in service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force at Jiangqiao in 1950, but further details are unknown.

  • Iran: According to some sources, the PT-17 was also employed by the Imperial Iranian Air Force in the 1950s, however we couldn't find any reliable source, so the drawing should be considered as speculative.

  • Philippines: In 1937 (though some sources claim it was one year before or even later), the Philippine Army Air Corps (PAAC) acquired an unknown number of the Stearman Model 73L-1 and L-3 (of which a total of 10 machines were manufactured) and 27 Stearman Model 76D-1 and D-3s (AKA BT-1) which makes a total of 37 Stearmans serving with the PAAC.
    This version was armed, as it was equipped with a defensive machine gun at the observer's position and had provision to carry small bombs under the fuselage. In 1941 they were know to be in service with the 1st (School) Squadron at Zablán Field and the 7th Squadron, at Maniquis Field, of the PAAC, however, given the situation of the PAAC, they were very unlikely to have seen any action when Japan invaded the Philippines in December 1941.
    After World War 2, in 1947 with the creation of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), many PT-17s  were acquired to serve at the PAF's school and even some surviving Model 73s were put into service with that same school. They were kept in service until the mid-to-late 1950s.

Martin Type 139 - Various Foreign Users

 
The Martin Type 139 was an all-metal monoplane bomber that was used by the United States Army Air Corps and by many other countries:
  • China: The National Revolutionary Army, (Kuomingtan's Armed Forces) ordered six 139s which Martin called them 'Type 139WC' (the letter 'C' standing for 'China'). This version was powered by two Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines which could deliver up to 850 hp of power each. 
    They arrived in China in February 1937 and were used in August against the Japanese in the Battle of Shanghai, where the Chinese Nationalist Air Force (CNAF) launched a major strike with a formation of various types of aircraft. One of such attacks took place on 14th October 1937 when three 139WC, two Heinkel He.111A, five Douglas O-2MCs, five Northrop Gammas and three Curtiss Hawk IIIs, based in Nanjing, bombed Japanese positions.
    Later, on 19th May 1938, the Type 139WC has the honour of being the first aircraft to conduct a raid into Japanese mainland. On that day, two 139WC belonging to the 2nd Bomber Group, 14th Squadron, commanded by Cpt. Hsu Huan-Sheng and Lt. Teng Yen-bo successfully flew a nighttime raid over Japan. However, instead of dropping bombs, they dropped propaganda leaflets over the cities of Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Kurume, Saga and some others, while making reconnaissance duties over ports, airports, warships and factories. 
    Most of the 139WC were destroyed during the course of the war.
  • Japan: After the fall of the Dutch East Indies, three Type 139WH (the export version made for the Dutch colony) and Type 166 were captured intact by the Nippons and shipped to Haneda, Tokyo to be evaluated by the Testing Division of the Army Aircraft Authority. Their ultimate fate is unknown, but they were most likely destroyed during an air raid.
  • Philippines: Apparently, some few B-10B (regular production variant) were leased to the Philippine Army Air Corps (PAAC) by the 4th Composite Group. They were most likely, destroyed during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. As we couldn't find graphical evidence of a B-10B serving with the PAAC, the drawing should be considered as speculative.
  • Thailand: Six Type 139WS (the 'S' standing for 'Siam') were sold to Thailand in April 1937. They saw action against the French in the Franco-Thai War in late 1940 and January 1941 and later they were used to support Japanese troops in their advance towards Burma in early 1942. They were complemented by an amount of ex-Dutch airplanes given by the Japanese later that same year. They were kept in active service until 1949.
  • Turkey: When fascist Italy sought to expand their empire in the Mediterranean, the Turkish Government, decided to equip their air force with a long-range bomber. Therefore Cpt. Enver Akoglu was sent in a mission to the United States to purchase 20 Type 139WT ('T' standing for 'Turkey'). This variant was powered with uprated engines which could, theoretically, deliver up to 1.000 hp of power instead of the regular 750 hp. They arrived to Turkey in September 1937 and were assigned to 55 and 56th Tayyare Bölügü (Flying detachment, a squadron-sized unit) based at the city of Çorlu, in the Marmara region. Those were part of the higher 9th Tayyare Taburu unit. During 1941 and 1942 they were employed extensively in reconnaissance patrols over the Black Sea. When the type was showing its obsolescence, they were reassigned to other secondary and transport units. They were in active until 1946 with four of them crashing in 1945.

Boeing P-26 Peashooter, Spanish and Philippine users

The Boeing P-26 Peashooter was the first all-metal American fighter and the first monoplane fighter used by the United States Army Air Corps.
It was used by many foreign users like the Republic of Spain and the Commonwealth of the Philippines.

  • Republic of Spain: Twelve Boeing Model 281 were manufactured as demonstrators and one of them was sent to Spain in March 1935 with the objective of winning the contract that the Spanish government issued for a modern fighter that could replace their ageing Nieuport-Delage NiD.52. The contest was won by the Hawker Fury and the Boeing Model 281 was left unarmed in Spain at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and bought shortly later by the Fuerza Aérea Republicana Española (FARE - Spanish Republican Air Force) for the amount of 26000 dollars. It was piloted by Lt. Ramón Puparelli and was fitted with two Vickers 0.303in machine guns. However, it was shot down by a FIAT Cr.32 on 21st October 1936 close to the town of Getafe, shortly after the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
  • Commonwealth of the Philippines: In 1937 the Philippine 3rd and 4th Pursuit Groups were created and by July 1941 they were fully equipped. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, they were reinforced with 12 more. The Filipino P-26 entered in combat when Japan invaded, and they managed to shot down some Japanese aircraft. In fact, they claimed one G3M and two or three A6M Zero before the last of the P-26 was burned by their own crew to prevent capture on 24th December 1941.
